Connecting Education, Media Technology & Computer Science Applications
The Journal of Hypermedia & Technology-Enhanced Learning (J-HyTEL) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal publishing scholarship across three connected subject areas: Education, particularly educational technology and technology-enhanced learning; Media Technology, including hypermedia, multimedia, and digital interaction; and Computer Science Applications, where computing research has a substantive relationship to learning, communication, user experience, accessibility, or human interaction with digital media. Across these domains, J-HyTEL advances theoretically or conceptually informed inquiry, rigorous and transparent investigation, responsible uses of technology, and scholarly contributions that extend beyond the immediate context of implementation.
Three Connected Subject Areas
J-HyTEL's editorial scope is organised around three connected subject areas: Education; Media Technology; and Computer Science Applications. Across these areas, the journal prioritises clearly articulated research problems, appropriate and transparent methods, systematic evidence, responsible technology, and contributions that advance understanding beyond a specific artefact, institution, or implementation.
Education: Educational Technology & Technology-Enhanced Learning
Research examining how digital technologies, media, systems, and pedagogical practices support or transform learning, teaching, assessment, training, accessibility, digital competence, and professional development across formal, non-formal, vocational, workplace, community, and lifelong-learning contexts.
Media Technology: Hypermedia & Digital Interaction
Research on multimedia, hypermedia, multimodal communication, interactive content, digital storytelling, immersive and hybrid environments, and the ways people create, interpret, experience, communicate through, and interact with digital media.
Computer Science Applications & Human-Centred Computing
Research involving software, information systems, artificial intelligence, data-driven methods, human-computer interaction, cybersecurity, networks, IoT, embedded technologies, automation, decision support, and web, mobile, desktop, cross-platform, or immersive applications is considered when the central research problem and scholarly contribution have an explicit and substantive relationship to learning, communication, user experience, accessibility, or human interaction with digital media.
Across its interdisciplinary scope, J-HyTEL gives priority to research that clearly establishes what was investigated, why the problem is significant, how the inquiry was conducted, what evidence was generated, and how the findings extend understanding beyond the immediate technology, institution, or implementation examined.
Design and development studies are welcome when they address a clearly defined scholarly problem, engage appropriately with relevant literature, and employ transparent methods. Depending on the research question, evaluation may address learning outcomes, communication quality, usability, accessibility, user experience, adoption, functional effectiveness, accuracy, reliability, security, system behaviour, or implementation in authentic settings. Technical evaluation may contribute important evidence but does not independently establish fit with the journal's scope.
Studies situated in a particular institution, workplace, community, or other bounded setting should explain why their findings matter beyond that immediate case. Transferable contributions may include empirical findings, theoretical or conceptual insight, validated design principles, methodological advancement, comparative evidence, reusable frameworks, or implications for research and practice.
Types of Manuscripts

Every submission must articulate a clearly defined research problem; establish its scholarly significance; engage appropriately with relevant literature; employ methods, analytical procedures, and evidence appropriate to the research question; and explain how the findings contribute to knowledge beyond the immediate implementation or case.
Design and development studies: The development of an application, information system, algorithm, database, digital medium, learning technology, or hardware prototype may constitute a substantial component of the investigation, but the artefact must support rather than replace the manuscript's scholarly contribution.

General-purpose administrative or service systems without such a substantive connection are outside the journal's scope.

Artificial intelligence, generative AI, machine learning, deep learning, data mining, analytics, forecasting, classification, optimisation, recommendation systems, intelligent interfaces, and decision-support methods where the scholarly contribution concerns learning, communication, accessibility, user experience, human-AI interaction, or responsible interaction with digital media.
Human-Computer Interaction, Software & Digital Applications
Human-computer interaction, interaction design, user-centred design, user experience, usability, accessibility, software engineering, and the design and evaluation of web, mobile, desktop, cross-platform, and immersive applications where the research addresses learning, communication, accessibility, user experience, or meaningful human interaction with digital technologies.
IoT, Embedded, Cybersecurity & Networked Interaction
IoT, embedded and cyber-physical systems, sensor-based technologies, networked environments, authentication, privacy, cybersecurity, usable security, digital trust, automation, and intelligent monitoring where the study makes a substantive contribution to learning, communication, accessibility, user experience, human interaction, or responsible participation in digital environments. Purely technical infrastructure studies are outside the journal's scope.
Inclusive, Accessible & Responsible Digital Transformation
Digital inclusion, accessibility, assistive technologies, educational equity, the digital divide, ethical and responsible AI, algorithmic fairness, underserved communities, public-interest technology, digital participation, cross-cultural technology use, sustainable digital development, and the social implications of human interaction with digital technologies.
Research in computer science applications is considered within scope only when the central research problem and scholarly contribution demonstrate an explicit and substantive relationship to learning, communication, user experience, accessibility, or human interaction with digital media. The use of a computing system in an organisation, workplace, public service, commercial setting, or community does not in itself establish relevance to J-HyTEL.
Technical evaluation alone is insufficient. Studies centred exclusively on algorithmic performance, network infrastructure, embedded or control systems, cybersecurity, IoT, automation, databases, or general-purpose information systems without a substantive human-centred, communicative, accessibility-related, or learning-related contribution fall outside the journal's scope. A manuscript involving a technical artefact must establish a scholarly contribution rather than provide only a description of development or implementation.
J-HyTEL does not consider general-purpose administrative, commercial, organisational, or service systems without a clear relationship to its principal subject areas; purely technical investigations of algorithms, networks, embedded or control systems, cybersecurity, IoT, or computing infrastructure without a substantive human-centred contribution; or descriptive reports of completed products that lack systematic investigation and analytical depth.
Clinical diagnosis, treatment, patient intervention, clinical trials, and medical-device validation are also outside the journal's scope. Research concerning technology-enhanced education in the health professions may be considered when its primary scholarly contribution concerns learning, pedagogy, communication, accessibility, or educational technology.
Is Your Manuscript a Good Fit for J-HyTEL?
A strong submission contributes clearly to one or more of J-HyTEL's principal subject areas: Education; Media Technology; or Computer Science Applications. It addresses a well-defined scholarly problem, engages appropriately with relevant literature, employs suitable and transparent methods, presents systematic evidence or analysis, and demonstrates why the findings matter beyond the immediate study context.
For computer science application studies, authors should be able to state explicitly how the research advances understanding of learning, communication, user experience, accessibility, or human interaction with digital media. If this relationship is absent and the contribution is primarily technical or operational, the manuscript is unlikely to fall within the journal's scope.
