About J-HyTEL
Journal identity, scope, access, and publication schedule.
What is J-HyTEL?
The Journal of Hypermedia & Technology-Enhanced Learning (J-HyTEL) is a peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal covering educational technology and technology-enhanced learning; media technology, hypermedia, multimedia, and digital interaction; and human-centred computer science applications and information systems.
What subjects are within the journal’s scope?
J-HyTEL covers educational technology and technology-enhanced learning; media technology, hypermedia, multimedia, and digital interaction; and human-centred computer science applications and information systems. Computing manuscripts may address educational, professional, organisational, industrial, public-service, health-related, or community settings when they provide rigorous evidence concerning relevant human, technical, organisational, accessibility, safety, sustainability, or societal outcomes. Review the Aims and Scope before submission.
Does J-HyTEL accept computer science and system-development papers?
Yes. Application and system-development manuscripts may address educational, professional, organisational, industrial, commercial, public-service, health-related, or community settings. However, implementation alone is insufficient. The manuscript must investigate a clearly defined scholarly, technological, or human problem and provide systematic evidence concerning design, technical performance, usability, accessibility, adoption, user experience, human performance, decision-making, professional practice, organisational capability, safety, security, sustainability, learning, or responsible societal use.
What types of manuscripts are considered?
The journal considers original empirical research; theoretical and conceptual studies; design, development, and evaluation research; human-centred system, application, case, and field studies; and systematic reviews, evidence syntheses, and meta-analyses within the journal’s aims and scope.
Can students and first-time authors submit?
Yes. Submissions are welcome from established researchers, early-career researchers, students, practitioners, and first-time authors. All manuscripts are assessed using the same standards for originality, methodological rigour, ethics, scope, and scholarly contribution.
What language must be used?
Manuscripts must be written in clear academic English. Authors are responsible for ensuring that the language and organisation allow reliable editorial and peer-review assessment.
How frequently is the journal published?
J-HyTEL schedules three regular issues each year, in February, June, and October. Submissions are accepted throughout the year, but acceptance does not guarantee placement in a particular issue.
Is J-HyTEL open access?
Yes. Published articles are freely available to readers without subscription charges. See the Open Access Policy for the complete terms.
Where can I verify accreditation and indexing information?
For national accreditation, use the National Accreditation page and its linked SINTA and ARJUNA records. For abstracting and indexing coverage, use the separate Abstracting and Indexing page and the linked external service records. Avoid relying on screenshots, old announcements, or unofficial lists because coverage can change.
Preparing a Manuscript
Manuscript preparation, required files, anonymisation, metadata, references, and declarations.
Is use of the J-HyTEL Manuscript Template mandatory?
No. Authors may use the J-HyTEL Manuscript Template or prepare the Blinded Manuscript in another clear and professional Microsoft Word format that complies with the current Author Guidelines. J-HyTEL does not prescribe a fixed visual template for the separate Title Page.
What files are required for initial submission?
Initial submission requires two separate Microsoft Word files: (1) a Blinded Manuscript for peer review and (2) a separate Title Page containing complete author, biography, acknowledgement, and declaration information. Supplementary materials must be uploaded separately where applicable.
What belongs in the blinded manuscript?
Include the title, abstract, keywords, main text, figures, tables, references, and required reviewer-relevant declaration headings. Do not include author names, affiliations, email addresses, ORCID iDs, photographs, biographies, non-blinded acknowledgements, personal contact details, or other information that directly reveals authorship. Replace identifying information with [blinded for review] where necessary.
How should I anonymise the reviewer-facing file?
Remove identifying information from the file name, document properties, author metadata, comments, tracked changes, revision history, headers, footers, hidden text, embedded objects, and linked content. Where necessary, replace identifying institutional, ethics, funding, or repository information with [blinded for review].
What belongs on the separate title page?
J-HyTEL does not prescribe a fixed visual template for the separate Title Page. Authors may use any clear and professional layout. Include the complete manuscript title; full author names and intended order, without academic titles or professional ranks; departments or units; faculty where applicable; institutions; cities and countries; email addresses; ORCID iDs where available; clear identification of the corresponding author; a recent professional photograph and a brief academic or professional biography for each author; complete non-blinded acknowledgements; and all applicable contribution, funding, competing-interest, ethics, consent, data-availability, generative-AI, and prior-dissemination statements.
Is an ORCID iD required?
A valid ORCID iD is required for the corresponding author. Co-authors are strongly encouraged to provide their ORCID iDs. Each identifier must belong to the contributor whose name is entered in OJS.
Is there a maximum number of authors?
J-HyTEL does not impose a fixed maximum. Every listed author must satisfy the authorship criteria, approve the manuscript and author order, be entered separately in OJS, and accept accountability for the work.
What abstract and keyword requirements apply?
Research articles must include an unstructured abstract of 250–300 words covering the problem, objective, method, principal results, and conclusion. Provide five or six specific keywords that complement rather than repeat the title.
Which reference style is required?
Use IEEE numbered style. Every in-text citation must match a reference-list entry, every listed reference must be cited, and author names, titles, publication details, years, pages or article numbers, DOI links, and URLs must be checked against authoritative records.
May a thesis, conference paper, repository version, or preprint be developed into a submission?
Potentially, yes, when the related material is disclosed and the journal submission offers a distinct contribution. Provide the citation, DOI or stable URL, posting date, version information, and an explanation of the relationship. Review the Preprint & Prior Dissemination Policy.
Does the journal screen manuscripts for textual overlap?
Yes. Similarity reports are interpreted in context; a percentage alone does not automatically establish plagiarism. Editors assess the source, extent, attribution, prior-dissemination disclosure, and nature of the overlap. See the Plagiarism & Similarity Screening Policy.
May authors use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies?
Permitted use must follow the Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Policy. Every manuscript must contain a statement declaring use or non-use. AI systems cannot be authors, and the named authors remain responsible for accuracy, originality, references, data, interpretation, permissions, confidentiality, and integrity.
Submission & OJS
Accounts, uploads, contributor metadata, private tracking, and communication.
How do I submit a manuscript?
Register or sign in to OJS, begin a new submission, complete every required stage, upload the correct files, enter complete metadata, and confirm the checklist. Start through the Submission Portal.
Can I submit a manuscript by email?
No. Manuscripts should be submitted through OJS. Email is intended for technical support or editorial enquiries and does not replace the official submission workflow.
What contributor information must be entered in OJS?
Enter each author separately with their full name, email address, affiliation, country, ORCID iD where available, contribution information, and correct author order. Designate one author as the primary contact. OJS metadata must match the title page exactly.
How can I check my files before submission?
Use the Submission Readiness Checker to inspect the blinded manuscript and title page locally. Automatic checks support, but do not replace, a complete manual review. The checker does not require a specific Word template or visual layout.
How can I track my manuscript?
Sign in with the OJS account connected to the manuscript, then open Track My Submission. The private Submission Journey shows each manuscript linked to that account, its current editorial stage, completed and upcoming stages, required author actions, and available official documents. Use the linked OJS workflow record to upload revisions, respond to discussions, or complete production tasks.
Who can view a manuscript in Track My Submission?
Access is private. A manuscript is visible only to a signed-in user whose OJS account is connected to that submission as an author participant, including the submitting or corresponding author and any co-author who has been granted author access. Reviewers cannot use this portal to view an author’s tracking record, and one author cannot view another author’s submission. If a manuscript is missing, confirm that the correct OJS account is being used and contact the journal with the Submission ID.
I did not receive a confirmation email. What should I do?
First confirm in the OJS dashboard that the submission was completed. Check the registered email address and spam folder. When requesting support, provide the corresponding author’s name, manuscript title, Submission ID, submission date, and a screenshot of the issue.
Can authors nominate reviewers?
No. Reviewers are identified and appointed independently by the handling editor. Authors may report a specific potential reviewer conflict of interest with a clear explanation, but the editor retains the final appointment decision.
Can the same manuscript be submitted elsewhere at the same time?
No. Simultaneous submission is prohibited. A manuscript under consideration by J-HyTEL must not be submitted to another journal unless it has been formally withdrawn and the withdrawal has been acknowledged.
Peer Review & Decisions
Editorial screening, double-blind review, revisions, and outcomes.
What peer-review model does J-HyTEL use?
J-HyTEL uses double-blind peer review. Author identities are withheld from reviewers and reviewer identities from authors to the extent reasonably possible. Every research or other substantive scholarly manuscript accepted for publication must have received at least two completed independent external review reports. See the Peer Review Policy.
What happens after submission?
The workflow normally covers administrative verification, editorial screening, similarity and integrity assessment, external peer review, editorial decision, revision, final verification, acceptance, copyediting, proofing, DOI and metadata preparation, and publication. View the complete process.
Can a manuscript be rejected before external review?
Yes. Editorial rejection may occur when a manuscript is outside scope, lacks a clear contribution, contains serious originality or ethical concerns, cannot be evaluated reliably because of language or organisation problems, duplicates previous work without disclosure, or does not meet essential submission requirements.
How long does review take?
Published timelines are indicative targets rather than guarantees. Processing time varies with reviewer availability, manuscript complexity, specialist-review needs, ethical enquiries, revision quality, and additional review rounds. Consult the current Peer Review Process page.
What editorial decisions may be issued?
Possible decisions include Accept Submission, Revisions Required, Resubmit for Review, Resubmit Elsewhere, Decline Submission, and See Comments. Reviewer recommendations are advisory; an authorised, non-conflicted editor makes the final editorial decision after considering the complete record.
What should be uploaded with a revision?
Upload a revised manuscript and a point-by-point response letter. Identify every editor and reviewer comment, explain the action taken, and state where the change appears. When a recommendation is not followed, provide a respectful and evidence-based explanation.
Does a revision decision guarantee acceptance?
No. A revision decision permits reconsideration after the requested issues are addressed. Additional revision or review may be required, and the manuscript may still be declined when major concerns remain unresolved.
Fees, Waivers & Payment
Submission charges, APC timing, waivers, invoices, and payment integrity.
Is there a submission or peer-review fee?
No. J-HyTEL does not charge authors to submit a manuscript or participate in peer review.
When does the Article Processing Charge apply?
An APC applies only after the manuscript has successfully completed peer review and received formal acceptance, subject to any approved waiver or discount. Use the APC & Waiver Policy page for the current amount, payment conditions, and any future updates.
Does paying an APC guarantee acceptance?
No. Payment does not influence editorial screening, reviewer selection, peer-review reports, or the publication decision. Manuscripts are evaluated on scholarly quality, methodological rigour, ethical compliance, relevance, and contribution.
Can authors request a waiver?
Yes, according to the procedure described on the APC & Waiver Policy page. Waiver assessment is separate from scientific evaluation and does not influence the editorial decision.
When is an official invoice issued?
An invoice is issued only after formal acceptance and after the applicable fee or waiver status has been determined. Do not make payment based solely on an informal message or a document that cannot be verified through the journal’s official service.
Where can I verify an LoA, invoice, receipt, or certificate?
Use the unified Official Documents Portal for Letters of Acceptance, invoices, payment receipts, and author, reviewer, or editorial certificates. Enter the complete document number printed on the PDF or scan its QR code. A document should be treated as authentic only when the portal returns a matching valid record.
LoA, Invoices & Certificates
Eligibility, self-service downloads, document numbers, and verification.
When can a Letter of Acceptance be issued?
A Letter of Acceptance may be issued only after the manuscript has completed the required editorial and peer-review process and received a formal acceptance decision.
Can I receive an LoA while the manuscript is under review or revision?
No. An initial screening result, reviewer recommendation, revision request, payment request, or verbal statement does not constitute formal acceptance.
How can an author download an LoA, invoice, or receipt?
Use the Official Documents Portal. No account is required. Enter the complete document number beginning with JHT-LOA, JHT-INV, or JHT-RCT to verify the record and access the registered PDF when downloading is permitted.
How can I verify whether an LoA is authentic?
Check the official document number, verification code or QR code, and authorised digital signature, then confirm the record through the Official Documents Portal. Report any document that cannot be verified or whose portal metadata does not match the PDF.
When is an author certificate available?
An author or publication certificate becomes available only after the relevant article has been formally published. The certificate uses the final published author metadata.
Can authors, reviewers, and editors download their certificates?
Eligible authors, reviewers, and editorial members can verify and download an issued certificate through the unified Official Documents Portal using the complete certificate number or QR code.
Can names or author order be changed on an official document?
Official documents are generated from approved submission or publication metadata. Authors must verify names, author order, affiliations, and title before final acceptance and publication. Later changes require editorial assessment and supporting evidence and may not be approved when they would compromise the publication record.
Production & Publication
Post-acceptance work, proofs, Online First, DOI, licences, and corrections.
What happens after formal acceptance?
The manuscript enters production, which may include administrative and payment verification, copyediting, language and style checks, reference checking, typesetting, metadata verification, author proofing, licensing confirmation, DOI preparation, final approval, and online publication.
Will an accepted article be published immediately?
Not necessarily. Acceptance and publication are separate stages. The article must complete all applicable production, proofing, metadata, licensing, DOI, and publication-readiness checks.
Can authors choose a specific issue?
Authors may communicate relevant circumstances, but issue assignment is determined by the journal. Acceptance does not guarantee placement in a particular volume, issue, or publication month.
What is Online First?
Online First is an optional editorial pathway through which an eligible final article may be published before assignment to a regular issue. It is a final, peer-reviewed, citable publication rather than a draft or proof. See the Publication Schedule & Online First Policy.
Is every accepted article published Online First?
No. Online First publication is used at the editors’ discretion. An accepted article that is not selected remains in production until its regular issue is released.
Does the DOI change after issue assignment?
No. The existing DOI and original first-publication date are retained. Volume, issue, pagination, or article-identifier information is added to the same publication record.
Who owns copyright and which licence applies?
Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the rights necessary to publish, distribute, preserve, index, and make the work available. The licence shown on the individual article page governs that article. Review the Copyright & License Policy.
How do I request a correction after publication?
Contact the editorial office with the article title, DOI, nature of the error, correct information, supporting evidence, and an explanation of whether the error affects the findings or conclusions. Published records are not changed silently. See the Withdrawal, Retraction & Correction Policy.
Readers & Technical Support
Reading access, archives, reuse, accounts, uploads, and support requests.
Do readers need an account to access articles?
No. Published articles and their available PDF or XML files can be accessed without a paid subscription or reader account.
Where can I find previous issues and Online First articles?
Use the Archives for published issues and the Online First page for eligible articles awaiting issue assignment.
Can published figures, tables, or article content be reused?
Reuse is governed by the licence displayed on the relevant article. Provide appropriate attribution and check whether third-party material carries separate permission requirements.
I cannot log in. What should I do?
Use the password-reset function on the Login page and check the email account associated with your OJS profile, including spam folders. Contact support when the reset message does not arrive.
My file cannot be uploaded. What should I check?
Confirm the accepted file format, file integrity, file size, file name, internet connection, and selected submission component. Avoid creating duplicate submissions because of a temporary upload problem.
What information should be included in a support request?
Provide your full name, registered email address, Submission ID when available, manuscript title, current workflow stage, description of the problem, date and approximate time, browser and device, and a screenshot or exact error message. Never send your password.
How can I contact J-HyTEL?
Use the official Contact page. For an existing manuscript, include the Submission ID and title so the editorial office can locate the correct record.
